      O que é Transcrição Fonética?

      Transcrição Fonética é uma maneira de representar os sons de uma língua através de símbolos. A transcrição fonética é um dos meios mais comuns e confiáveis que os estudantes de língua inglesa possuem para descobrir a pronúncia de uma palavra e reproduzi-la sem mesmo nunca tê-la escutado antes.

      Estes símbolos também são comumente referenciados de IPA, que é o acrônimo de International Phonetic Aphabet (Alfabeto Fonético Internacional).

      Certamente deve ser confuso para alguém que nunca viu estes símbolos antes tentar entende-los. Mas isso é apenas no começo depois de um pouco de tempo e prática fica bem mais fácil entendê-los.


      Como funciona a Transcrição Fonética?

      Pois bem, para começarmos vamos usar a transcrição fonética da palavra “pronunciation”.

      pronunciation                  prəˌnʌnsiˈeɪʃən

      Quem possui o português como língua materna, é bastante provável que irá aportuguesar a palavra “pronunciation”  e pronunciá-la assim “pronuncieishan”. Aportuguesando esta palavra, a pronuncia correta mais próxima seria “prânancieishan”. Percebeu a diferença?! “pronun...” ficou “prânan...”

      Aguns dicionários de inglês até preferem aportuguesar as pronuncias ao invés de usar os símbolos fonéticos, mas a grande maioria dos dicionários, incluindo os dicionários monolíngues usam os símbolos fonéticos. Aqui, apenas por questões de entendimento inicial aos símbolos fonéticos, vamos aportuguesá-los em alguns casos. Mas lembre-se, o nosso objetivo principal é entender e aprender a usar os símbolos fonéticos.

      Pronunciation [prəˌnʌnsiˈeɪʃən]

      O símbolo fonético  ə de prə tem o som muito parecido com o de â da língua portuguesa;  prə semelhante a prâ.

      O símbolo ʌ é bem próximo ao a da silaba nannʌn semelhante a nan. Até agora temos prəˌnʌn... falta ainda o siˈeɪʃən.

      O símbolo i tem o seu som igual ao da letra i em português.

      O “a” de pronunciation tem sua representação fonética de e seu som semelhante ao de ei em português. Mais adiante, explicarei a real diferença entre a pronúncia dos símbolos i e eɪ. Por enquanto vamos nos limitar ao que já temos prəˌnʌnsiˈeɪ...  prânanciei... falta apenas o ʃən.

      Já ouvi muito o pessoal pronunciar o “tion” de pronunciation como o som em português  “tchion”  ou “shon”. A primeira alternativa é pior do que a segunda, a pronuncia mais próxima ao português seria “shan”. Sendo assim, o “tion” de pronunciation tem sua representação fonética
      ʃən, e a aportuguesando a pronúncia, ʃən  ficaria “shan”.

      Agora já temos a pronuncia completa de pronunciation utilizando sua representação fonética.

      O que são símbolos Fonéticos?

      Conforme já foi dito antes, os símbolos fonéticos são usados para representar os sons de uma língua. Existem vários símbolos fonéticos, demonstraremos aqui os símbolos fonéticos mais usados para representar os sons da língua inglesa.


      Observando o gráfico abaixo você verá que ele possui três abas – vowels, diththongs and consonants. Clicando em qualquer uma dessas abas será aberta uma nova tela com os símbolos fonéticos em tamanho maior. Cada símbolo fonético possui uma pequena seta no canto superior direito. Clicando nesta seta, aparecerá um conjunto de palavras que possuem o som daquele símbolo fonético.Clique nos símbolos ou nas palavras para ouvir como eles são pronunciados.

      Entenda como os símbolos fonéticos funcionam

      Para atingirmos nosso objetivo que é entender como funcionam as transcrições fonéticas e assim conseguirmos descobrir a pronuncia das palavras através apenas da transcrição, continuaremos aportuguesando os símbolos fonéticos  para melhor entendimento dos mesmos.

      Em alguns casos não vamos nos aprofundar na pronuncia de alguns sons por serem parecidos com os sons em português. Tenha em mente de que todo processo, é um estudo para ajudá-lo na correção e aperfeiçoamento da pronuncia; os sons em inglês não são precisamente iguais aos sons em português, é necessário ouvir muito aos sons e associá-los aos seus respectivos símbolos fonéticos para se obter a pronúncia exata dos sons. Explicar esses símbolos usando os sons da língua portuguesa serve apenas como referência inicial para quem está começando a entender os sons da língua inglesa.

      Nos casos em que houver necessidade será observada a diferença entre a pronuncia do inglês americano e do inglês britânico.

      Acompanhe a explicação dos símbolos fonéticos logo abaixo, vamos seguir a mesma ordem mostrada no gráfico e também as mesmas palavras como exemplo.

      ˈ      Esta aspa vertical não é exatamente um símbolo fonético,
      mas ela está bastante associada à eles. Este símbolo marca o stress
      da palavra; ou seja, ele marca a ênfase da palavra. Para facilitar o
      entendimento podemos dizer que ele diz onde fica a silaba tônica
      daquela palavra. Por exemplo a palavra phonetic não é pronuncia-
      da netêc e simtêc. Dessa forma, o ˈne de fəˈnetɪk deve
      ser pronunciado de forma mais forte e demorada em relação às
      silabas que não são enfatizadas. Isso deve ser feitos com todas as
      palavras em inglês. Ocorrem casos em que essa marcação se torna
      mais que crucial.

                        
      iː / i  Tem o som de i como na palavra portuguesa bico, o
      diferencial aqui são estas indicações ː que lembram os dois 
      pontos. Elas enfatizam que este som é um pouco mais  
      prolongado do que o habitual. É como se pronunciássemos 
      biico ao invés de bico.
      Com este som pronunciamos as palavras  seat [ˈsiːt], green [ˈgriːn] e tree[ˈtriː]. Escute a pronuncia destas palavras utilizando o gráfico acima. Pode ser que você encontre nos dicionários, principalmente americanos, apenas a representação fonética i sem o símbolo ː ; ainda assim, a pronuncia será prolongada da mesma forma que  . 

      ɪ    Este som exige bastante atenção para não utilizá-lo de forma incorreta, em alguns casos ele pode até parecer com o som em português de i, mas na verdade ele está mais para um ê pronunciado de forma curta. Tomando por exemplo a palavra fish temos a impressão inicial de que sua pronuncia aportuguesada seria físh como na palavra portuguesa vixe. Mas observando a sua transcrição fonética [ˈfɪʃ  ] vemos que seu símbolo fonético é ɪ, e não. Ao invés de pronunciar físh, você deve pronunciar algo mais próximo de fêsh. Lembre-se que não se trata de um ê carregado, se trata de um ê um tanto forte mas ao mesmo tempo pronunciado de forma curta. Assim se pronunciam também as palavras sit[ˈsɪt] e bit[ˈbɪt].

      ʊ    Este som é muito parecido com o nosso u da palavra pula. Os cuidados a serem observados é que este som não é longo, é um som curto;  e produzido mais internamente do que externamente. As palavras good [ˈgʊd], foot[ˈfʊt] e pull[ˈpʊl] possuem este som. Clique nas palavras deste símbolo fonético para compreender melhor sua pronuncia.

      No inglês americano para algumas palavras, parece haver, além dessa, uma outra alternativa para pronunciar este som: seria um  som mais fechado para ʊ, lembrando um pouco o schwa ə [â] pronunciado de forma curta, algo do tipo û, sendo pronunciado não com o mesmo som, mas na mesma posição do nosso ô.

      uː  / u  Tem o som de u como em português, o que se tem a observar é a indicação ː requer uma pronuncia mais longa do que o habitual. É como se pronunciássemos a palavra luta de luuta. As palavras food[ˈfuːd], rule[ˈruːl] e shoe[ˈʃuː] são pronunciadas com este som. Os dicionários americanos podem representar esta pronuncia apenas com o símbolo u, ainda assim, a pronuncia seguirá as mesmas observação que , sendo também prolongada da mesma forma.


      e / ɛ    Talvez este seja um dos sons mais fáceis de explicar. Este como o som de é em português. Fica fácil pronunciar as palavras com este som. Este som é produzido mais internamente que æ. Verifique no gráfico como ficam as pronuncias para head[ˈhed], bet[ˈbet] e said[ˈsed]. Sendo representado com o símbolo ɛ, teríamos [ˈhɛd], [ˈbɛt] e [ˈsɛd].

      ə   Este é o símbolo fonético mais comum da língua inglesa, tão comum que tem até um nome ‘schwa’ [ʃwɑː](shuá). O schwa possui
      um som fraco e nunca é enfatizado, as vezes quando é pronunciado muito rápido quase não se percebe seu som na palavra, podendo até, dependendo da situação, ser omitido por completo. O schwa tem o som parecido com o â em português, só não é tão carregado quanto. Teacher[ˈtiːtʃər], observer[əbˈzərvər] e about[əˈbæʊt], são exemplos de palavras que possuem o schwa.

      ɜː / ɜː ʳ Este símbolo tem basicamente o mesmo som do schwa, mas não se comporta da mesma maneira; por ser um pouco mais longo, ele não é difícil de ser escutado e nunca é omitido como o schwa. Em alguns, casos você pode encontrar a letra r sobrescrita ɜː ʳ, isso significa que este r é pronunciado somente no inglês americano; no inglês britânico, geralmente no final das palavras, este r não é pronunciado.  Palavras que possuem este som: girl[ˈgɜːʳl], nurse[ːʳs], earth[ɜːʳθ]. Observação: Estas mesmas palavras também poderiam ser representadas de [ˈgərl],[ ˈnərs] e [ˈərθ] respectivamente.


      ɔː  No inglês americano este símbolo tem em o som de ó como na palavra portuguesa . Certamente você já entende o que significam estas setas ː ; elas informam que este som é um pouco mais demorado do que comumente falamos. Seria como dizer sóó. Ouça o som destas palavras utilizando o gráfico fonético do British Council: walk[ˈwɔːk], door[ˈdɔːr] e four[ːr].

      No inglês britânico este som é mais fechado, mais parecido com ôô.

      æ  Este símbolo tem um pouco do som representado pelo símbolo fonético e (é). Contudo é possível observar que,  este som é mais aberto, mais longo e mais elaborado que e no inglês americano. Em alguns casos pode parecer um duplo ee ().

      No inglês britânico é um som mais curto, semelhante ao som de ʌ ; diferenciando-se apenas por ser produzido mais internamente e por ser ligeiramente um pouco mais nasalizado que ʌ.

      Veja os exemplos para as palavras que possuem este som: had[ˈhæd], lamb[ˈlæm] e apple[ˈæpəl].

      ʌ   Este símbolo tem o som próximo ao de a em português, sendo pronunciado de forma aberta e ao mesmo tempo de forma curta, como na palavra . Sua comparação mais próxima seria com som de  , sendo a diferença, que este último é pronunciado de forma mais aberta e mais longa.
